From Research to Practice: Scaling Building Envelope Intelligence with AI What does it take to turn deep academic research into a scalable technology platform? In this talk, the co-founders of Lamarr.AI reflect on a decade-long interdisciplinary collaboration spanning both academia and industry, culminating in a commercial AI platform for building envelope intelligence. The presentation will highlight the technical breakthroughs, system design choices, and hard lessons learned while translating research into real-world impact. This talk will offer insights for researchers, practitioners, and innovators working at the intersection of AI, sustainability, and the built environment. About the Speakers: Tarek Rakha, Ph.D. Dr. Tarek Rakha is a scholar-practitioner working at the intersection of building science, artificial intelligence, and climate resilience. He holds a Ph.D. in Building Technology from MIT and has spent over a decade leading federally funded research focused on building envelopes, urban energy systems, and environmental performance diagnostics. A Regent’s Innovator on leave as Associate Professor and Director of the High Performance Building Lab at Georgia Tech, his work bridges theory and practice by operationalizing research outcomes into scalable, field-tested technologies used by cities, universities, healthcare systems, and building owners. Senem Velipasalar, Ph.D. Dr. Senem Velipasalar is an expert in machine learning, computer vision, and intelligent sensing systems, with a research career spanning academia and applied technology development. She received her Ph.D. from Princeton University and is a Professor in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department at Syracuse University, where she leads the Smart Vision Systems Lab. Her research has been recognized with numerous honors, including an NSF CAREER Award, the IEEE Region 1 Technological Innovation Award, and the TACNY 2025 Technologist of the Year Award. Dr. Velipasalar’s work focuses on designing robust ML systems that move beyond laboratory settings into production environments, with applications across infrastructure, mobility, and the built environment. |

How Q-SUCCEED-CNY Connects Local Residents to Emerging Semiconductor and Quantum Career Opportunities Central New York stands at the forefront of a technological revolution, with federal and state investments poised to create thousands of high-tech jobs in semiconductors, quantum technologies, and photonics. Join us to learn how these emerging industries are reshaping our regional economy and discover the career pathways available to local residents. Presenter Moamer Hasanovic will introduce Q-SUCCEED-CNY (Quantum and Semiconductor Upskilling for Career Change through Experiential Education Deployment in Central New York), an NSF-funded initiative designed to help adult learners, career changers, and veterans explore opportunities in these high-demand fields through hands-on workshops, immersive bootcamps, and direct industry engagement—no prior technical background required. Whether you're a business owner seeking to understand the regional workforce landscape, a community organization supporting career transitions, or a community member curious about high-tech career possibilities, this session will illuminate how our community can participate in and benefit from Central New York's transformation into a semiconductor and quantum technology hub. About the Speaker: Dr. Moamer (Mo) Hasanovic is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Syracuse University, where he serves as Principal Investigator on multiple NSF-funded workforce development initiatives. As PI of EdQuantum, he developed a nationally recognized quantum technologies curriculum that has been piloted at eight community colleges across the United States, reaching over 300 adult learners and resulting in multiple peer-reviewed publications and conference workshops. Dr. Hasanovic's research expertise spans RF engineering, semiconductor manufacturing education, and quantum optics. He leads Q-SUCCEED-CNY, an innovative program designed to introduce adult learners, career changers, and veterans to career opportunities in semiconductors and quantum technologies through experiential learning. His work bridges cutting-edge research with practical workforce development, supporting Central New York's emergence as a leading hub for advanced semiconductor manufacturing and quantum-enabled technologies. |
