On August 12, Syracuse Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems (SyracuseCoE) held a briefing for Partner Program members, followed by our annual Innovation Showcase. We were thrilled to host more than 100 guests, including faculty, students, staff, and partners from companies and community-based organizations across Central New York and beyond!

Our Partners Day briefing is an opportunity for members of SyracuseCoE’s Partner Program to learn more about collaborations between faculty and companies, as well as program benefits.

The briefing began with a welcome from Michael Birnkrant of Carrier Corporation and featured presentations from faculty including Jianshun “Jensen” Zhang, Bing Dong, Lihong Lao, and Ian M. Shapiro. School of Architecture Associate Professor Bess Krietemeyer provided an update on the DOE Advanced Building Construction Phase II project, and College of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS) Research Assistant Professor Tong Lin highlighted services available through the Analysis and Design Center. Additionally, ECS Professor of Practice Alexander Deyhim gave a presentation on the Mechanical Engineering Capstone program, which pairs undergraduates with sponsor companies to provide 1,500+ student hours of design work over two semesters.

Next, Emad Rahim from CenterState CEO gave an overview of the new INSPYRE Innovation Hub in downtown Syracuse, which offers mentorship, incubator programs, and coworking space.

Finally, Hydronic Shell Technologies (HST) provided an update on the ongoing pilot project at 418 Fabius Street. In partnership with Syracuse Housing Authority, HST is completing a building energy retrofit that reduces HVAC emissions and improves thermal comfort with minimal disruption to tenants. Akshay Ramani, Lead Mechanical Engineer at HST, Lisa Hart, Public Health Analyst/Grants Manager at Syracuse Housing Authority, and Professor Shayan Mirzabeigi, SUNY ESF, shared details on this collaborative effort.

Following the Partners Day briefing, SyracuseCoE hosted the Innovation Showcase, featuring poster presentations and a celebratory reception. Exhibits and posters were on display showcasing:
